Indo Tabriz Wool Hand-Knotted Rug
During the Mughal Empire, India was renowned for weaving rugs that blended Persian and Indian design elements. Modern Indian weavers often replicate Persian designs but with a distinctly Indian color palette. This rug is based on a classic Tabriz pattern, traditionally found in northwestern Iran, but its deep reds, blacks, and olive greens give it an unmistakably Indian touch.
The design is known as "mahi," meaning "fish" in Persian, and features stylized fish swimming in four directions. The fish symbolize prosperity, and the four directions represent infinity-signifying infinite prosperity.
